Your engineering cover letter has to accomplish a few very important things. For starters, it needs to follow a strict format. A cover letter should be written like a business letter with a formal address, block style paragraphs, and a professional close. And, while it follows those rules, it has to be unique. Your cover letter should help you stand out from the crowd, even if it looks like every other cover letter in a company’s application pile at first glance. How do you do that? By making your content original, and by making sure you sell yourself as best as you can.

Of those two things, the format is the easy one. All you need to do is follow the guidelines. Picking out your content is more difficult. When you are writing your engineering cover letter, keep the following tips in mind so that your application puts you ahead of the competition:

Education is important. In the case of an intern, this is doubly true. If you haven’t graduated yet, then you’ll probably want to focus on something unique you did or learned in classes that makes you a good fit for the job. If you have graduated, mention your degree briefly. You don’t want to focus on education only, especially not if you have real world experience, but it can’t hurt to show the hiring director that you are smart.

Use your experience. Most engineers have some sort of experience. Classwork often demands that you do some research projects. If you’ve given presentations on a bridge for a large audience before and you are applying to a civil engineering company that specializes in bridge design, that is worth mentioning. If you’ve done research and used equipment that would be useful to your job, mention it. If you’ve had an internship, then you’ll want to review the responsibilities you had at that job.

Always relate back to the company. No matter what, when you are listing your skills, make sure to explain how those talents are relevant to the company. Being able to research local bridges and assess them for damage will help the company do its job accurately. Having experience with equipment means you can handle procedures that the company needs done. These skills benefit the company, which is what the hiring director will be looking for.

There are several great examples of engineering cover letters for you to look at when you are crafting your job application materials. Sometimes learning by example is the best. So, take a look at some of these free cover letter samples before you write yours up:

Technology is continually expanding. First we had computers, then we had the Internet, and now the Internet has a variety of tools that you can use to find jobs, promote yourself, and have fun. So it’s really no surprise that technology jobs are on the rise. If you know how to program software, read code, make a website, engineer new circuits, or solve complex equations, then you fit in this job niche perfectly. And because this niche is so popular, there are many specialty job boards available online to help you in your search for the perfect position at a technological company.

Dice.com is one of the biggest and most reputable job search engines on the Internet that focuses on technology. You can browse through jobs by location, job title, or skill, and this website even offers a special section dedicated to green technology. Also, you can post your resume for recruiters to find, which ups your chances of landing a job you love. The more exposure you get, the better. Plus, while using the resume feature, you can see what employers have viewed yours. That way you know who’s been looking at you and you can improve your resume accordingly. Along with all of these tools, Dice.com also offers advice on landing tech jobs and it provides forums for your questions. You’ll find information on salary, certifications, and licensing, too.

DevBistro.com is a growing technological job board that is free for all users. According to its homepage, it currently sees half a million viewers per month, which is a lot of traffic. The more traffic it sees, the more job postings it will have, and the more opportunities it will offer to users. The job search and job posting procedures are very easy, and it’s also simple to post your resume or search resumes if you’re a recruiter. This website also has articles on tech jobs and interviewing.

Tech_centric (http://www.tech-centric.net/) is another, newer job board. The search feature lets you sort jobs by category and state, and you can save your favorite jobs in a folder to view later. Tech_centric also provides a list of the most popular keywords used so you can get into the competition and find the best jobs. To give you an edge, the website also posts the latest technology news so you can stay current (hint: you could end up impressing a hiring director if you are able to talk about their latest products or achievements during an interview).

It’s no secret that forensics jobs are very popular these days. With shows like Law and Order, CSI, NCIS, Numb3rs, and Bones, viewers across the nation get to watch forensics workers on the job every day. Although a real forensics job isn’t as glamorous as depicted on television, they do still serve an important role. Some forensics workers have to sort through evidence, run complex scientific procedures, and identify unknown compounds. Others work with computers or other materials. If you have the education and experience to perform this job, it’s a rewarding one. So, use a rewarding search engine when looking for your dream position. The following are all great resources for forensics jobs.

FBI or other government websites offer great forensics jobs. Since this is the best way to get into criminal forensics, use these resources. The FBI’s website is http://www.fbijobs.gov/, and you can find openings for forensic accountants, intelligence analysts, and more.

Forensic Magazine (http://jobs.forensicmag.com/a/jbb/find-jobs) also offers a lot of great job postings. This magazine specializes in forensic information, so the writers do the research for you. They find the best jobs to post and put them online for you to see. You can find jobs in anthropology, archaeology, biology, engineering, psychology, linguistics, computing, and more. You can even search for part-time work, contract jobs, internships, and permanent positions, so this website is useful for both students and the experienced worker.

There are a lot of very specialized job boards in this area, too. Try doing a Google search one crime scene forensic jobs, digital forensic jobs, or other queries for specific job areas. Forensics is a very broad term, and it’s much easier to search for specifics. For instance, a search for “digital forensic jobs” will yield the Digital Forensic Investigator (http://jobs.dfinews.com/a/jbb/find-jobs) website, which gives you jobs only in digital forensic analysis. Find niche websites such as this and you’ll find the right job for you.

An office job isn’t for everybody, especially if you’re not a 9 to 5 kind of person. Writers, artists, web programmers, and other professions have an alternative option: freelance work. This work for hire approach means that you take on jobs for companies and individuals on a temporary basis. You work for your “employer” until the project is complete, and then move on. And you can do all of this from the comfort of your own home if you have the right skills.

Elance.com is one of the best sources for freelance job postings online. You can find jobs in writing, graphic design, web programming, office assistance, engineering, legal professions, and sales and marketing. Every job posted is for temporary work. You post an individual bid for each job you want to win and set a price and due date on your own. If the employer likes your bid, you are awarded the job. Payments are made through a secure system, like Paypal, and work is done remotely via computer and phone. Membership to this job board is free, but paying members get access to more jobs per month.

Guru.com is another freelance job board. Free memberships are offered, though paying members can apply for more projects. Employers post projects and freelancers bid on them much like Elance. You must tailor your bid within the budget and time frame of the employer. However, there are plenty of opportunities for earning big bucks here. If you have skills in Ecommerce, editing and translation, graphic design, engineering CAD designs, database programming, photography, telemarketing, or business consulting, you’ll find a job here.

iFreelance is a third job board dedicated to helping freelance workers. This website lets you build a portfolio with a resume and examples of work so that employers can find you. You can then search jobs. Each listing shows a budget, desired time frame, and job description. You’ll also be able to see how long you have left to submit a bid before a job is awarded.

All three of these are great freelancing tools that will help connect you with employers. You’ll find fun, temporary jobs to work on without a problem.

Sales jobs come in many shapes and sizes. They can be simple retail positions in mall stores or complex management positions at a telemarketing company. These jobs require as many specialized skills as any other profession, and competition is fierce. That’s why using the best job search engines is important. While large job boards like Monster and LinkedIn can give you results, there are plenty of niche websites that can help you out, too.

SellingCrossing (www.sellingcrossing) is one of the largest job search engines for sales jobs. It offers a risk free trial so that you can begin your search without paying. And it’s worth using. This meta search engine draws positions from company webpages, newspapers, job boards, and classified ads and compiles them in any easy to manage results page. It offers several hundred thousand jobs per month, so you know your chances of finding a job with this tool are greater than if you used another resource. You have the option of sorting results by job type, location, or job description. And, it has a section that displays the ten most popular jobs, so you know where the real competition is. This tool can definitely help you choose the wisest job openings to apply to.

SalesTrax (www.salestrax.com) is another great resrouce. It allows you to search recent sales postings by keywords and location. It also gives information on recruiting events, such as career fairs. By attending one of these events, you boost your chances of networking within the industry and landing a job you truly love. Since this is one of the only websites that offers this feature, it has to be counted among the best sales job boards.

SalesClassifieds (http://www.salesclassifieds.com/Main/Default.asp) offers classified ads for sales jobs. You can search through jobs by company, location, or job title. But what really makes this tool valuable is the resume wizard it offers to users. You can build a new resume online and post it for recruiters to find, and the whole process is incredibly easy. SalesClassifieds has job postings from some of the most reliable sales companies in the nation, like Kraft Foods, Bae Systems, and Rolls-Royce, so you can really find good positions here.

Medical jobs differ from many other industries. While engineers, restaurant managers, and other professionals may have to worry about liability in some ways, there’s much more at risk when your job is to work with the human body. Everyone from medical secretaries to researchers to doctors feels the pressure in this field, which is why employees require so much training and education. However, despite the rigorous demands of the job, there are many professionals competing for these positions. In order to increase your chances of finding the perfect medical job for you, try searching at one of the following medical job boards.

Absolutely Health Care (http://www.healthjobsusa.com/) is one of the best resources for medical job seekers. You can browse over 300,000 jobs in this industry, and sort through results based on position type, job category, keywords, and location. This means you don’t have to look at the thousands of postings available, only the ones that are relevant to you. You can also post your resume so recruiters find you, which enhances your chances of getting hired. Along with these tools, Absolutely Health Care also offers blogs and forums for medical employment questions. There is a section on obtaining licenses, a section on relocation, and even career tips from pros.

Medzilla (http://www.medzilla.com/) is another option for medical jobs. This search engine will help you find internships and full-time positions in many medical fields. They have postings from many respected companies, such as Baxter, MedFocus, and Genzyme, so you know you’ll be searching reputable advertisements. Plus, they offer a salary survey, forum for questions, and helpful links.

Medical Workers (http://www.medicalworkers.com/) is a much simpler job search engine. The home page is set up like Google. You type in your job title, company, or skill and search by location. Alternatively, they list jobs in categories (allied health, nursing, physician/surgeon, and other). While not as complex as other job boards, simplicity is sometimes a good thing, so this is worth checking out.

Hospitality is a wide field with many different specialties and opportunities. Workers in this field may be employed in hotels, where their responsibilities include customer service and event planning. They may be employed in restaurants as managers, waiters, or hostesses. They may be in the travel industry as flight attendants. However, these jobs aren’t always easy to find. If you have the skills, education, and experience to land one of these jobs, you need to look in the right place to find the openings. That’s where hospitality niche job boards come in handy.

Hospitality Job Site (http://www.hospitalityjobsite.com/jobsearch/) is the premier website for hospitality jobs. You can search this job board by category and find cooking jobs, food service jobs, travel jobs, and lodging/hotel jobs with the click of a mouse. You can also search for jobs by location. Since it lists every state in the U.S., every province in Canada, and national jobs, you have a lot of options when you use this tool. It is one of the largest databases for this type of work. It also has a feature that lets you post a resume so recruiters can find you. On top of that, it has resume writing tips and useful links for any job hunter.

Engineering jobs are in high demand now, since new buildings are always being constructed, new highways need designed, and medical research is pushing the envelope. For this reason, engineering may be one of the easiest industries to find a job in. Whether you are a mechanical engineer, civil engineer, industrial engineer, chemical engineer, electrical engineer, or bioengineer, there is definitely a job search engine specially designed to help you. These niches can help anyone with the right education and experience to take on this type of technological job.

Engineer.net (www.engineer.net) is a great resource for engineering jobs. The featured jobs are shown on the home page, and you can look at other results by browsing or searching for specific keywords. You can also search by job level (entry-level or professional level). This means you can find job openings that suit your experience. Plus, they offer job feeds to help notify you of new postings, as well as job tweets on Twitter, which you can follow. In short, this resource has everything you need to find and learn about new engineering opportunities.

Engineering Crossing (www.engineeringcrossing) is another great resource. This job search engine pulls postings from employer websites, so it works like a meta search engine. It also has jobs from classified ads and other job boards, which means you get the most results. They offer a risk free trial so you can start your search free of charge.

Finding good teaching jobs can be difficult. Recently graduated students usually have to rely on substitute teaching jobs until they find a school with an opening for a permanent position. And with the competition for those spots, it can be hard to get hired. Teacher’s assistants, substitutes, and full-time teachers all need to find work, though, and there are plenty of online job boards that have information on openings in this occupation. These niche websites can help expose you to the highest volume of available teaching jobs on the Internet.

Teachers.net (http://jobs.teachers.net) is a great resource for finding teaching jobs. There are job forums for teachers, recruiters, tutors, continuing education questions, and national board exams. This help, along with the job postings, will help you further your career in the teaching field. You will also find classified ads on this website, both for jobs (like tutoring services) and teaching materials (like books). All in all, it’s a great resource.

GreatTeacher.net (http://greatteacher.net) is another good resource for teaching jobs. There are resource links, message boards, and chat rooms for your use, as well as job postings. You can post your resume here and let recruiters find you while you’re searching for jobs, too.

ABC teaching jobs (www.abcteachingjobs.com) has a lot of information for new and experienced teachers. This website specializes in K-12 education, so there are no college jobs posted here. However, you can post your resume and search their extensive database for elementary, middle school, and high school education positions. Their search engine sorts jobs by state, by school type, and by subject area, which makes it simple for you to sift through results and find the right jobs for you to apply to.

In the nursing field, there are plenty of options for jobs. Most nurses will end up working in a hospital, but others will choose to work in assisted living or nursing homes, while still others will go to private practices or home care. No matter what your intent in the nursing field, or your experience – whether you’re a nurse’s assistant or you have your Masters in Nursing – there are plenty of job search engines dedicated to finding openings in this niche.

One of the best search engine to use is the Nurse.com (www.nurse.com/jobs/Index.cfm) website. Here you will find nursing jobs organized based on specialty. You can find cardiology, certified nursing assistant, infection control, OB/GYN, rehabilitation, wound care, and research jobs, just to name a few categories. If you have a specialty, this is definitely the job search engine for you.

MedJump (www.medjump.com) is another great search engine. It has all kinds of medical jobs, including Nursing. Whether you have an RN, LVN, or CRNA, you can find a job posting here that will meet your needs.

NurseFriendly (www.nursefriendly.com/nursing/jobengine.html) has a lot of information on nursing jobs, too. They also give information on building your nursing career, nursing salaries, interview tips, and more.

All three of the above websites are free for job hunters to use. You can search through all of the job postings, send in your resumes, and perfect your cover letters with the tips and tricks you’ll find there as well.
