Free job boards

There are many free job boards on the Internet for use by both job hunters and employers.  The following are among the top rated of these websites:

-Craigslist (www.craigslist.org):  This is a classifieds website where employers list jobs as they would in the newspaper.  Job hunters can search for jobs in their discipline and in their area (or in a new city).  Be aware that not all job postings are legitimate.  Any employer who asks for you to pay a fee for an interview (or for anything) is probably trying to scam you.  However, if you are careful, then this is a great resource.

-Job Spider (www.thejobspider.com): This free job board allows free job posting and resume posting so employers can search for you while you search for them.  The website is also extremely easy to use.

-Doostang (www.doostang.com):  This free job board is especially useful for young, new workers fresh out of college or in the first years of their career.  If you want to upgrade your search with Doostang, you can pay for a month’s worth of premium services, but the free version should meet all of your needs.

-GigFish (www.gigfish.com): This website allows you to search through free job postings based on job categories, location, and popular keywords (like “customer service,” “data entry”, or other skills).  This search engine is free for job seekers and employers.

-Post Job Free (www.postjobfree.com): This website may not have all of the extra features that other job boards have, but it’s easy enough for anyone to use.   It is set up almost like a Google search engine.  Simply type your keywords into the search box and start finding jobs immediately.

Keep in mind that free job boards have some downfalls.  Since employers and recruiters don’t have to pay, anyone can post a job advertisement.  And this leaves room for scams.  Don’t fall prey to scam artists who ask you to pay for a background check or interview.  Also, a job advertisement may come from an individual looking for temporary, freelance work, not a permanent job (although the advertisement may indicate otherwise).  So, be sure of what you’re getting into.  And, job advertisements may not be as detailed as you wish.  They may not list salary requirements or specific skills the company is looking for, meaning you’ll have a tougher time tailoring your resume and cover letter for that position.  However, if you use common sense, these pitfalls shouldn’t be a problem.
