Interviews can be a nerve-wracking experience. As a potential employee, you want to impress the hiring manager, show off your skills, and explain how you will benefit the company more than any other potential hire. The only way to ensure a smooth interviewing process is to prepare and stay calm. The following tips will help you put your best foot forward in any interview.
Practice Makes Perfect – Before going into any interview, make sure you practice answering questions. Do an Internet search for common job questions, or look at some of the other posts on this blog, and think about your answers to all of them. Practice saying your answers out loud so you can figure out the clearest and most concise way of communicating your abilities to a potential employer. This way, when you enter the interview, you’ll already have an idea of what you are going to say; thus, you won’t have to come up with many impromptu answers.
Do Your Research – Make sure you learn as much as possible about the company you are interviewing for. Be aware of the products they make, their company goals, and how you could fit in. If you can find out extra details, such as how they manufacture the product, then you’ll be well off. Then, when the hiring manager asks you what you know about the company, you’ll have a lot to tell them. Hiring managers are usually impressed when a potential employee is aware of the way the company works.
Dress to Impress – Make sure you are dressed appropriately for your interview. Don’t wear wrinkled clothes. Style your hair and your outfit in a business-like manner. First impressions are often involve physical presence, so make sure you put your best foot forward.
Be Prompt – Don’t be late for an interview. Aim to arrive up to 10 minutes early. Don’t be too early, though, as it may inconvenience the hiring manager.
Relate Everything Back to the Company – Where possible, try to relate your answers to questions back to the company you are interviewing for. If asked about your communications skills, give examples of how you’ve used those skills in the past and then give a brief explanation on how you’d use them to the company’s benefit if hired.
Be Polite – Make sure to send a thank-you note after the interview. This shows that you can be respectful, which is something all employers value.
