Free Job Search Tips

When searching for a job, you want to search for something more than just your next paycheck.  Job satisfaction is as important as getting paid.  So, how do you find the job that is right for you?  The following advice should get you on the right track to finding that perfect career.

Assess Your Skills and Desires – Finding the right job means understanding yourself first.  Think about your own skills and desires.  What are you good at?  What type of work keeps you happy?  What are your career goals?  Knowing these facts beforehand will help you find job advertisements that suit your needs.

Use the Internet Wisely – Job posting websites are great, but make sure you use them right.  You want to find a job that suits your skills.  Don’t apply to jobs you aren’t qualified for.  And don’t apply to jobs that don’t match up with your career goals or desires, either.

Research companies – When hunting for a job, make sure you research all of the companies you submit your resume to.  Try to find out what the work environment is like, what benefits employees get, what type of work you’ll be doing.  Sometimes jobs aren’t what they appear to be at first sight.  For example, an engineering job may really be a desk job, which won’t suit you if you want to work in the field.

Ask Questions – During an interview, ask about the work environment.  Ask the hiring manager everything you need to know to evaluate your fit with the company.  Don’t be shy.  Hiring managers are usually happy to answer these questions and impressed by those brave enough to ask.

Using these skills will help you during the job search process.  While you want to find a job that suits you, you also need to prove to an employer that you are the best candidate for them.  To do this, make sure you target your resume correctly and make a good first impression.  Take the time to perfect your cover letter, too.  Your first impression on a hiring manager is made on paper when they read your application, so put your best foot forward.  If you are called in for interview, show off your personality and make sure you are put together.  Dress nicely, be yourself, and relax.  These are the best methods of impressing a potential employer.
