Free Job Search Websites

When looking for a job, there are many things a job seeker should be aware of.  There are several free online job posting websites for you to peruse.  This means that you can find hundreds of jobs to apply to, thus increasing your chances of getting hired.

There are many options for job seekers:

  • Large job boards like Monster and CareerBuilder
  • Classified ads
  • Niche websites
  • Newspaper websites
  • Search engines

Large job boards have many advantages and disadvantages.  Because they are so popular, the odds of you finding a good job are high.  Many employers post on these websites.  However, many people search them, too, meaning competition for jobs is high.   Also, because they are so large, it can take time to search through all of the available positions to find the ones that interest you.

Classified ads are very useful because they also have a lot of job postings.  Some of them are smaller than these large job boards so they are easier to search through.  However, because it’s often free to post an advertisement, you may come across scams.

Niche websites are job boards that specialize in a certain profession or job type.  This means they are often smaller than Monster, but they are easier to search.  Instead of searching through thousands of jobs in many professions, you are exposed to hundreds of jobs that suit your specific needs.  The downside is that not all recruiters and employers will post to these smaller websites, so you may have fewer options.

Newspaper websites usually have local job postings.  If you search on your local newspaper’s website, you’ll likely find online postings of their printed classified ads.  These are easy to search however their listings are limited.  Because newspapers usually only print ads from local companies, this resource will most likely give you local jobs only. For some, relocating will lead to better job opportunities, so searching locally limits your choices.

Search engines sometimes have job postings.  Yahoo! is a notable example.  This search engine has its own job section (HotJobs).  Employers and recruiters have to pay to post their job openings here, so you know their won’t be many scams (if any).  Also, they are sometimes as large as big job boards, so you’ll be able to find many potential positions.
