When writing your application materials for a nursing job, there are a ton of things that you have to consider. For the cover letter, you have to think about the format first, since the format is already set in stone. You also have to think about which skills to mention in your letter and how to best sell yourself to the company. Though the format is easy to learn, picking what to write and how to write it isn’t. Here is some great advice when it comes to writing a nursing cover letter:
Your resume will list some of your technical skills, such as giving medications and taking blood pressures, but these aren’t worth mentioning on the cover letter. For starters, these are skills that every nurse should have, so it won’t impress a hiring manager if you mention them in your cover letter. Do they want to see evidence that you can do those things? Of course, but they can get that from the resume (having a great education and on the job experience will prove this).
Try to think about what makes a good nurse stand out from the crowd. Odds are, if you’ve ever been treated in a hospital, you had favorite nurses. They were always the ones with the positive attitude, great bedside manner, and patience. This is what you want to highlight. Any nurse can give a patient medicines, but patients appreciate being treated well. The level of treatment a patient gets helps them decide if they’re coming back to your particular hospital or office, so hiring managers won’t ignore this skill.
Be sure to mention any outstanding experience you have, too, not just your bedside manner. If you can do a difficult procedure most nurses can’t, that’s also worth mentioning. Intensive training in a particular area, such as neurology or endocrinology, will also help you land a job.
