Free tips and guide on how to write a cover letter

There are a few things that are very important to remember when writing your own cover letter.  Take the following tips and tricks to heart:

Be professional. Since you want to get hired by a reputable company, it’s very important to be professional when writing your cover letter.  Most hiring managers assume that if you come off as a respectable and reliable person on paper that will hold true in person.  And that’s how you get interviews.

Be unique.  Every applicant will be sending in a resume and cover letter.  The way to make yourself stand out is by being uniquely you.  Don’t list some boring skill in your cover letter that every applicant will have.  Talk about a different job experience you had and why that makes you the best candidate for the job.  Explain why you will work harder and benefit the company more than other applicants.  If you can make yourself stand out in this fashion, you’re more likely to get the interview and the job.

Sell yourself to the company.  A lot of job hunters want a company that works for them, but that’s not the hiring manager’s priority.  Sure they want an employee who is happy with their job, but a hiring manager is going to be more concerned about what you can do for them.  So, when talking about your skills, always relate it back to the company.  Explain why the company can benefit from your work, why you’ll be an asset.  If you can do this, it will show your dedication and increase your chances of landing the job.

Use appropriate language.  This goes along with the first tip: be professional.  You should use formal, business language.  Don’t type slang words as if you were talking to a friend. And don’t use a thesaurus to find the fanciest words around.  Use natural language that would be heard in the work setting.

Follow the format.  Though you want to be unique, you don’t want to do it by varying from the set format.  Cover letters should all be set up as a business letter.  This makes them look professional and also makes them easy to read quickly.  If you change the format, hiring managers will notice, but that attention won’t be good.

If you keep these five tips in mind and follow them, you’ll be sure to have a great cover letter that can help you land the job of your dreams.
